A nod to the classic barefoot lap endurance contest, the Great Groveland Barefoot Laps Challenge is a test to see who can barefoot the longest around Lake David. The twist: after the second full lap, the boat will decrease speed by 2 mph and continue to decrease speed by 2 mph on every lap until the skier falls.

RULES
Competitors are pulled in a counter-clockwise direction and can choose their starting speed, up to 42 mph. After the second full lap, the boat will decrease speed by 2 mph and continue to decrease speed by 2 mph on every lap until the skier falls. The top two longest runs of each division will go into a head-to-head final showdown, following all divisions. The overall head-to-head endurance winner of each division will receive an award. In finals, boat will not decrease speed; skiers can choose speed, up to 42 mph.
All barefooters must either be on their feet or off their device and on their bare feet within the 60-foot, 2-buoy marked zone – a.k.a. the Step Off Zone. If a competitor stands or reaches their feet after the Step Off Zone, then a 20-second penalty will apply. Barefooters can perform deepwater starts, but apparatus starts like step offs, 2-ski bomb outs and other creative start variations are encouraged.
Barefooters must stay on their feet at all times -- no butt checks, butt riding or deep 3 point position. This will be monitored and ruled upon by the boat judge.
Athletes must compete on their bare feet — no duct tape or any material affixed to feet will be allowed. Clincher-style gloves are also not allowed to be worn during the competition. The boat judge and Athlete Director will monitor and make a call as they see fit.
Age divisions are 16 and under, ages 17-34, ages 35-49, ages 50-64 and ages 65 and up. One person from each division will win a “Longest Barefoot Run” award — they will go head to head with the second top score in the division to compete for the division’s “Head to Head Champion” award.
Unlike traditional Feet on Fire rules, barefoot suits are allowed.
NEW IN 2024
THE DUCT TAPE DIVISION
This all ages division allows for competitors to use tape of any kind on their bare feet for their run. The small catch — instead of reducing speed after the second lap, the boat will reduce speed by 2 mph after EACH lap.
>>> FEW RULES:
There will be no head-to-head battle for this division — the competitor who holds on the longest wins. The “Best Start” and “Best Crash” awards do not apply for this division.
The same rules apply as above in the standard divisions for starting your run and staying on your feet, as well as no clincher glovers.
Competitors are allowed to register for both a standard age division and the duct tape division; this means you will have at least two runs during the contest. Those competing in multiple divisions can only wear duct tape for their duct tape division run.
Competitors must provide their own tape.
